Tech talks to cover virtual and augmented reality, modeling and animation, simulated environments
January 28, 2013A series of one-hour tech talks covering such topics as virtual and augmented reality, modeling and animation, and real-time simulated environments will begin Feb. 12 at ITaP’s Envision Center for Data Perceptualization.
The talks are open to faculty, students and staff. To register, email Eric Palmer at ewpalmer@purdue.edu. Space is limited and registration is first come, first served. All of the sessions will take place from 2-3 p.m. in the Envision Center, Stewart Center, Room B001, which is located off the tunnel between the Stewart Center and the Purdue Memorial Union.
Each session will be preceded by a tour of the Envision Center at 1 p.m. Faculty, students, staff, visitors and alumni are welcome to attend the tour without attending the tech talk. When registering please indicate whether you will be attending the tour, the tech talk, or both.
The Envision Center uses a blend of technology and art to help enhance research and teaching by graphically representing data and information through techniques such as scientific visualization, animation, motion capture and immersive 3-D virtual environments.
“The tours will allow people to view our work and see what we are capable of doing,” says George Takahashi, Envision Center technical lead. “The tech talks are designed to explain how the technology works and how we use it at the Envision Center. The goal is to make the technology more accessible, understandable and enticing to Purdue researchers, whether faculty, students, or staff.”
The tech talks include:
- Virtual and Augmented Reality, Tuesday Feb. 12. George Takahashi, Envision Center technical lead, will cover technology and devices used for virtual and augmented reality, including tracking methods, calibration and stereoscopy.
- Modeling and Animation, Tuesday, March 5. Envision Center technicians Chris Mankey and Mike Hoerter will explore methods and techniques employed to create detailed computer models and animations for rendered videos and real-time simulations.
- Real-time Simulation in Unity, Tuesday, April 16. Envision Center Unity specialist Jacob Brown will demonstrate generating simulated environments using Unity, software that also allows simulated environments to be ported to the Web.
