Seminars to cover virtual and augmented reality, modeling and animation, simulated environments

  • Events

A series of seminars covering such topics as virtual and augmented reality, modeling and animation, and real-time simulated environments for research and teaching will begin Wednesday, Oct 9, at ITaP’s Envision Center.

The sessions, which will last about an hour, are open to faculty, students and staff. Space is limited and registration is first-come, first-served. For more information on the workshops, email Eric Palmer at ewpalmer@purdue.edu.

All of the seminars will take place in the Envision Center, Stewart Center, Room B001, which is located off the tunnel between the Stewart Center and the Purdue Memorial Union.

ITaP's Envision Center uses a blend of technology and art to help enhance research and teaching by graphically representing data and information. It specializes in technology and techniques such as data visualization and analysis; virtual simulation; human-computer interaction; and media creation, including video and animations.

Besides operating the hardware and software, expert staff and students at the Envision Center consult on ways to graphically represent research and enhance teaching and they collaborate on grants, including building proof-of-concept demos that may be needed for proposals. Projects have ranged from 3-D visualization of data on the fluid mechanics of the Great Lakes to a life-sized interactive virtual clean room for training pharmacy students. The virtual clean room can be projected in the center’s flagship four-walled immersive virtual environment.

“The seminars will explain how the technology works, how we use it at the Envision Center and how we can assist Purdue faculty, students and staff in making use of it,” says George Takahashi, Envision Center technical manager.

The sessions include:

  • Virtual and Augmented Reality at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9. An introduction to technology, devices and methodologies used in creating virtual and augmented reality. Register here.
  • Computer Modeling and Animation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. An introduction to computer modeling and animation for rendered videos and real-time environments.
  • Unity Simulation Programming at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6. An introduction to programming virtual environments and simulations in Unity, including for Web deployment. Register here.
