Data-intensive computing school aimed at graduate students, post-docs, faculty and professionals

Purdue will host a no-fee virtual summer school on data-intensive computing aimed at students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty from Purdue and other Indiana schools and professionals from government, business and industry looking to gain skills in managing, processing and gaining insight from large amounts of data.

The virtual summer school will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 30 to July 2 in the Discovery Learning Research Center, Room 221, at Purdue’s Discovery Park. Space is limited so participants should register soon. There is no cost to register.

“We would like to encourage students, faculty, and professionals not only from Purdue to attend but also from the surrounding areas,” says Verónica Vergara, a scientific applications analyst who coordinates training for Purdue’s ITaP Research Computing (RCAC).

The virtual summer school will cover the nuts and bolts of data-intensive computing, common tools and software, predictive analytics algorithms, data management and non-relational database models. The emphasis is on providing a solid foundation as a starting point for advanced topics relevant to attendees’ work. Those attending should be experienced working with Linux, familiar with relational databases and understand basic programming concepts.

Participants register through the National Science Foundation Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), in which Purdue is a partner. A free XSEDE account can be created on the XSEDE user portal at portal.xsede.org.

The Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering is a national program for participants from almost any field who deal with large collections of data, including researchers and practitioners from fields such as the physical, biological, economic and social sciences as well as engineering. Purdue is only site in Indiana hosting the data-intensive computing sessions this summer.

The virtual school is delivered nationwide using high-definition video conferencing to allow students to interact in real time with course instructors and to work in person with fellow computational scientists and local experts. At Purdue, staff from ITaP Research Computing (RCAC) will be on hand.
