Virtual Omaha Beach Demonstration 6/2/09

Purdue and Indiana University researchers are commemorating the 65th anniversary of D-Day by releasing the first version of a 3-D, interactive model of the Omaha Beach battlefield.

A demonstration will take place at the Advanced Visualization Lab Tuesday on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. The event will demonstrate the 3-D model of a key battlefield in the allied invasion to liberate France on June 6, 1944, and several methods of using the system for learning.

“The model, which includes 3-D pillboxes, beach obstacles, field guns, or ships is, in effect, a Web interface,” said Purdue Professor Sorin Adam Matei, its creator and leader of Visible Past, a project developing similar virtual historical sites. “By simply pointing to an object or location of the virtual battlefield, you can call up more information, collaborate with other learners, or add new information.

Matei, an associate professor of communications, is an affiliate of the Envision Center for Data Perceptualization, part of Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) and its Rosen Center for Advanced Computing. Envision Center staff members and students help develop the D-Day and other Visible Past models.

Students using Virtual Omaha can walk or fly through the model of the beach and the French countryside behind it, taking the perspective of the American or German troops who fought during World War II. Users can inspect troop positions from all angles and information about the digital artifacts encountered can be brought up automatically.

“The really novel aspect of the project is that if another group uses the model while you are visiting it, any information that they add to it will become available to you instantly,” Matei said.

Besides the Web, the Visible Past models can be run in 3-D virtual environments like the three-walled, room-sized system at the Envision Center. They also work in Google Earth or through free, open source software for 3-D Web-based modeling.

In the near future, people visiting Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, will be able to use an iPhone application, developed by Matei, to access the model and collaborate remotely with others.

“We will have professors delivering a tour to a group in Normandy, while students in Indiana will be able to see and hear through (an immersive virtual environment) what their colleagues see and do in France,” Matei said.

The iPhone application also can be used as a “location-aware” guide for Omaha Beach or any historical site documented by the Visible Past project. When visiting the Roman Forum, for example, information about the nearest building could be sent automatically by Visible Past to the iPhone. “This is ubiquitous computing, where information searches for you,” Matei said.

Virtual Omaha is one of the more than two dozen 3-D models, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites, that can be used for teaching and collaboration through the Visible Past project. The models, some of which were created collaboratively by a worldwide community of students, scholars and amateur historians, are enhanced with information collected by Purdue students. Among the projects under development are the Roman Forum, the Taj Mahal and the Statue of Liberty.

To introduce Virtual Omaha to the public in anticipation of the June 6th D-Day anniversary, public presentations will be given at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the Advanced Visualization Lab on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Object-oriented C/C++ Course to be offered -- 4/6/09

A six-session course on object-oriented C/C++ will begin on April 6th. This course provides an introduction to the C and C++ programming languages. The following topics will be covered: primitive data types, structured programming, functions, arrays, pointers, run-time environment, classes, inheritance, polymorphism, templates, Standard Template Library, and object-oriented programming. Previous programming experience is not required, but familiarity with Basic, FORTRAN, or other programming language will be helpful. Registration is required.

Intel has directed its innovative capacity to the challenges of energy and environment to not only improve its processes and products, but also to give the industry an example of how great these changes are that can be achieved. Bob Deutsche, Principal Architect, will be presenting Sustainable IT in a Predictive Enterprise. Sustainable IT is viewed as three components; Data Center, Client & Mobile Computing, regulatory compliance and industry self-regulation. Nehalem – A new generation of intelligent processors from Intel that delivers more performance, density and energy efficiency than ever before. Tackling large scale problems just got faster. With more balance than ever before, the soon to be announced Nehalem processor exceeds the performance of a multi-million dollar supercomputer a mere decade ago and dramatically decreases total time to solution. Behind the performance is a new microarchitecture that delivers extra bandwidth, smarter caches and more instructions per cycle than ever before – the difference more performance, smaller footprint and less power.
10:30-11:45 a.m.	Breakout sessions in Rooms 318 and 320: “Collaboration and Visual Analytics Research and Development at Intel,” Cynthia Pickering, senior principal engineer for IT Strategy Architecture and Innovation. Based on research conducted within Intel IT, we have identified several unique requirements for global team collaboration. Our findings included that two-thirds of Intel employees work on distributed teams and the same percentage also work on multiple teams that may or may not have overlapping interests. These and other data led us to seek a solution that would seamlessly support the complexities discovered while enhancing team and personal productivity. To adequately represent the complexities, we needed an object-oriented information workspace where the use of a 3D user interface allows users to retain multiple contexts and share across them. Currently we are in early adopter exploration with a 3D virtual world environment for enterprise virtual teams. We see this as a natural extension to our current web 2.0 Social Computing roadmap that IT is currently deploying to Intel employees. We are collecting usability data and looking at the impacts of avatar representation, spatial audio and persistent dedicated 3D workspace on team and personal productivity. Early adopter virtual world examples include: a simulation-based environment for training factory technicians to repair machines in equipment bays or “Bay Watch”, Enterprise Operations Monitoring and Management Center, dedicated Project Rooms for teams of Knowledge Workers, and My Personal Office. Next we plan to extend the virtual world capability to include a visual analytics toolkit for richer content creation, information visualization, and interactivity to improve the speed of making the right decisions. To achieve the desired level of realism, new compute architectures and increasing compute power will be required. Thus, our work creates opportunities to expand market size for our products and platforms and impacts Intel internally by improving productivity while enriching the research community with leading edge concepts that synthesize consumer and workplace models of human activity. “High-Performance Cluster Applications: Scalable Software Solutions,” Henry Gabb, principal engineer, Intel Software and Services Group. The Intel Software and Services Group has a collection of innovative tools to facilitate application development on HPC clusters. This talk will discuss the individual components of the Intel Cluster Toolkit. Case studies of actual customer projects will demonstrate how the tools make MPI debugging and tuning easier. The Intel Cluster Checker, an important component of the Intel Cluster Ready Program, will also be covered. This tool makes cluster validation, debugging, and tuning easier. (Intel Compilers, Performance Libraries, Threading analysis tools, Cluster Tools, Thread Profilers, vTune Performance Analysis Tools. Open MPI, TBB) Cluster Toolkit, Cluster Checker, Intel MPI, vTune). The discussion will present the process Intel applies to developing and maintaining high performance computing software for clusters. This includes gaining the insight where parallelism can exist; presenting standards based methods to introduce parallelisms into your software; acquiring the confidence that your parallel applications are yielding correct results and finally optimizing the performance for multi and many-core solutions.

1:30-2:45 p.m.	Breakout sessions in Rooms 318 and 320: “Capability Maturity Framework,” Robert Deutsche, principal architect, Predictive Enterprise. Many executives are struggling to optimise the way they manage and measure the business value of IT investments. Too often these executives report that they lack adequate knowledge and the tools which will allow them to manage IT in a sustainable coherent fashion while optimising the value contribution to the business. There is a gaping hole waiting to be filled by a unifying, value-based management approach—an approach which focuses on both process and outcome and acts as a unifying lens for existing IT frameworks and improving management practices where current knowledge or practices are often poor or non-existent. In response to this, Intel and the National University of Ireland Maynooth Co-founded the Innovation Value Institute (IVI). IVI is Multi-disciplinary research and education establishment that is amalgamating leading academic theory with the best of corporate and public-sector experience to foster innovation in the management and usage of IT to optimise business value. The IT-Capability Maturity Framework (CMF) is at the heart of IVI’s research agenda and is an emerging blueprint of the key processes encapsulated in the IT capability of an organisation. A core function of the IT-CMF is to act as an assessment tool and a management system with associated improvement roadmaps to help continuously improve, develop and manage the IT capability in support of optimised value delivery. Bob Deutsche, Principal Architect, will provide a detailed overview of IT-CMF, explain how it is being used @ Intel as well as explain how it is being integrated with our Predictive Enterprise program. “Intel i7 Overview and Roadmap,” Luis Rodriguez, technology specialist, Enterprise Solution Sales. Technical Presentation -- SGI scientific applications

Interested in learning more about real applications of High Performance Computing in the Sciences?

Join SGI and James River Technical at Purdue University on September 17th to hear a presentation by Dr. Ilene Carpenter.

Dr. Carpenter currently manages the benchmarking group at SGI, which ports and runs customer applications to determine their performance on SGI systems. She has experience parallelizing and optimizing a variety of weather and climate models and is particularly interested in the methods and architectures used for high performance scalable computing. She holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an A.B. in Chemistry from Cornell University. She did post-doctoral research in computational chemistry at UC Irvine and the University of Minnesota before joining Cray Research in 1992.

Please join us for this exciting seminar! We will be covering real world research examples in different scientific disciplines including Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, and Environmental Science. Different programming models and computer architectures will be explored.

LSU HPC workshop via the Access Grid

CMS Tier 2 Workshop to be held at Purdue -- April 11, 2008

The Rosen Center for Advanced Computing (RCAC) and Norbert Neumeister, who leads the CMS effort at Purdue University are hosting the United States Spring Workshop for all of the Tier 2 sites participating in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In this collaboration, there is a vast amount of data and computation that is shared among the participating sites. As a result of this needed exchange, we are active members of the Open Science Grid (OSG) to help nurture the growing infrastructure to provide the most resources available for research. The CMS Tier-2 center at Purdue is a facility to support the computational needs of physicists in the US and across the globe.

Condor Boot Camp at Purdue - October 25, 2007

The Rosen Center for Advanced Computing (RCAC) at Purdue is developing a campus-wide and state-wide consortium tentatively called BoilerGrid. BoilerGrid will offer to participants the use of idle cycles from a large number of computers for the purpose of conducting scientific research.

Condor from U. of Wisconsin is a specialized workload management system for compute-intensive jobs. Condor provides job-queuing, scheduling policies, priorities, resource monitoring, and resource management. Condor is able to operate on idle cycles on regular computer hardware. The student lab that sits idle in your department for 12 hours a day can now become a compute resource useful to researchers around the state with "high-throughput" applications.

By harnessing these idle cycles on HPC clusters and student labs, RCAC is able to deliver millions of hours of computing time to researchers from Purdue, the state of Indiana, and the nation.

Purdue’s presence at SC07 includes an exhibit booth (booth #302), participation on the SC07 Executive Committee, participation in the bandwidth challenge, and participation in the student cluster challenge.
