Please introduce yourself

Dane Deemer, Senior Computational Scientist

Why would I come to you for help?

Analyzing, interpreting, or accessing biological data. I am well versed in multi-omic datasets and modeling/analyzing nuanced biological data.

What's one professional skill you're currently working on?

Containerization, specifically automating workflows using a combination of Apptainer with Snakemake and running on HPCs.

What's your go-to productivity trick?

Keep a glass full of ice with cranberry juice on my desk.

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?

Persistence and depth. I have a strong curiosity about how things work and enjoy understanding from the beginning and at the most granular level.

What led you to this career?

I wanted a job without a ceiling, meaning I could always learn more and push as far as I wanted.

What are you currently excited about in your job?

Learn more about HPCs and distributed computing and storage so I can continue building tools for the scientific community.

How long have you been on the Anvil team/at RCAC?

2 months!

Education, publications, engagement (groups part of), etc...

Part of PAMs and Whistler Center. Published a fair amount but not too much.

Why did you decide to become a mentor for the REU program?

I truly enjoy working with earlier career professionals.

What value do you get from being a mentor for the REU program?

Make a positive impact on the education of an undergraduate. Inspire new scientists to be better than current ones.
