Licensing Instructions

There are three ways to license ArcGIS Pro:

  • Named user license (preferred for individual computers; required for students using ArcGIS Pro on non-Purdue owned computers)
  • Concurrent use license (preferred for labs; can only be used on Purdue owned computers)
  • Single user licenses (for Purdue owned computers not connected to the network)

Named user license (preferred for individual computers; required for students using ArcGIS Pro on non-Purdue owned computers)

For this method, you must first have an account on Purdue's ArcGIS Online Organization. (Think of this as a named license server.)

Procedure to create your ArcGIS Online account if you do not already have one is:

  • Go to: https://purdueuniversity.maps.arcgis.com.
  • Sign in using your Purdue Career account; use the 'USING YOUR PURDUE UNIVERSITY ACCOUNT' button on the login page.
  • Your online account will be set up automatically the first time you log in; there will be no forms to complete. Your ArcGIS Online account name will be based on your Purdue career account name; it will be something like ... xxxx@purdue.edu_purdueuniversity.

After creating your ArcGIS Online account, you should automatically have access to ArcGIS Pro. (If access is refused, send an email to itap@purdue.edu requesting that your account be configured to use ArcGIS Pro.)

If needed, download the ArcGIS Pro Installer and install the software. Note that ArcGIS Pro can be installed with any ArcGIS Desktop version. You may not need to install anything if you are using Purdue Lab machines.

The instructions for signing in after opening ArcGIS Pro are:

  • Be sure to select the 'Enterprise Account' button near the bottom of the ArcGIS Pro Log In page to enter your Purdue Career account.
  • On the next page, enter 'purdueuniversity' in the space provide so that the complete url is: purdueuniversity.maps.arcgis.com and then select continue.
  • Then select the 'Using Your Purdue University Account' button.

Concurrent use license (preferred for labs; can only be used on Purdue owned computers)

The procedure to set the license server after starting ArcGIS Pro is:

  • Select 'About ArcGIS Pro' in the bottom left
  • Select 'Licensing' near middle of the left column
  • Select 'Configure your licensing options' near the bottom of the Licensing window
  • Select 'Concurrent Use License' for the License Type
  • Select 'Advanced' as the license level; you can select Standard or Basic if you wish
  • Enter ' arcgislm.itap.purdue.edu ' for the License Manager; there is no Backup to enter
  • Select the extensions that you wish to use
  • Select 'OK' in the bottom right
  • Select the appropriate link in the right column (or select '<-' button in the upper left for opening ArcGIS Pro page) to start using ArcGIS Pro

Message to computer lab administrators: One needs to do a 'silent' install for ArcGIS Pro to make the concurrent license feature work correctly. See "https://community.esri.com/thread/191146-arcgis-pro-licensing-issue" for more details on how to make this work.

Single use license (for Purdue owned computers not connected to the network)

  • Single use license can only be used on Purdue owned computers.
  • The procedure is to obtain a provisioning file for a single use license is:
    • Send an email to: itap@purdue.edu requesting a single use ArcGIS Pro license for a Purdue Computer. By default, an Advanced type will be generated. You can specify Basic or Standard types if you wish. All extensions will be included.
    • An email will be sent from Esri to the Purdue email address used to send the original request that will contain a “provisioning” file that will contain the authorization numbers and instructions on how to enter these authorizations numbers.

Note that single use licenses will need to be updated each year around the renewal date of Purdue’s contract with Esri (July 30).
