Purdue’s Women in High-Performance Computing (WHPC) group is hosting a talk by Elizabeth Karcher, associate professor of animal sciences, titled “Everyone is welcome: Effective practices for creating engaging and inclusive classroom environments” on Feb. 28 from 1-2 p.m in LWSN 1142.

Karcher has formally taught over 2,500 students in over 50 course offerings and developed four study abroad programs to the Netherlands, Italy, and Vietnam. Her research in learning focuses on the development of innovative experiential learning platforms to enhance student learning and develop intercultural competencies in undergraduate animal science curricula. She has published over 25 journal articles on education-related topics and was the recipient of three education-related grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 2022, Karcher was awarded the Purdue University Murphy Award for Undergraduate Teaching. Additional honors include the USDA Excellence in College and University Teaching in Food and Agricultural Sciences Teaching Engagement Award, the Purdue University Exceptional Early Career Teaching Award, and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Teacher Scholar Award.

Karcher has collaborated with the Rosen Center for Advanced Computing (RCAC)’s Envision Center on animal science simulations and games, including chicken farm animal welfare simulators and a chicken digestion game used for elementary and middle school students.

Karcher earned a bachelor’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree from Purdue, and a doctorate from Iowa State University. She received her postdoctoral training at Michigan State University.
