XR Lab

The XR Lab seeks to enhance research and educational outcomes through innovative extended reality environments by providing access for the development of visualizations, simulations, inquiry-based activities and other virtual laboratories to engage students in practical experiences and offer new perspectives on course materials and scientific data.

Research Tools

Conduct studies in virtual environments, join in collaborative applications, and explore your data further with immersive visualizations.

Education Tools

We've partnered with instructional design experts to help build virtual laboratories, interactive simulations, and other educational tools for integration into course curricula as XR Classrooms.

XR TECHNOLOGY

Extended reality (XR) includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). VR is composed of entirely digital information. AR overlays digital information on top of the real physical world. MR also incorporates digital information in the real-world view with the addition that the physical and digital elements may interact. XR applications can be deployed to desktops, smartphones, and immersive headset devices.

FAQs

Do all virtual labs or simulations require headset displays?
No, while immersive technology provides benefits such as enhanced spatial awareness, many virtual experiences are sufficiently presented on desktop or laptop computers. We will be happy to work with you to help determine what is best for your content delivery.

Is it expensive or difficult for me to acquire and maintain the devices and content required for an XR experience?
It is our intention through this program to reduce the cost and difficulty of accessing these technologies by providing assistance in obtaining and maintaining devices and content.

Do I need my own space to build an XR experience?
If your program requires space for equipment and/or collaboration, we can work with you to schedule time in the Envision Center Forge space to conduct XR experiences.
