Regulated Research Workshop Series

Regulated Research Workshop Series 2020-2021

Regulated Research Workshops: a series of workshops to identify existing resources and develop collaboration venues for new insights and building collective “buying power” to advance the higher education research computing community

While federal regulations are not new territory for research computing, much of the communication is still single direction and research institutions are left independently to solve the similar challenges as their peers.

This workshop series, conducted virtually, seeks to facilitate a discussion among the affinity groups who collectively participate in the controlled research enterprise, specifically targeting issues related to building and supporting federally regulated research environments. The primary goal is this series is to explore the challenges and potential strategies facing this community.

All computing systems for regulated data involve much more than a single role or unit, but rather this is typically many groups working together in a completely new space. Here are some of the most common roles at the table for handling regulated research:

  • Acquisitions/purchasing
  • Privacy office
  • Compliance office
  • Information Security Office
  • Office of research and Contracts and Grants Office
  • Institutional Review Board
  • Legal Counsel
  • Distributed grant management offices in colleges, departments, centers, and institutes
  • IT support organizations, central and distributed
