Esri ArcGIS ArcMap Desktop

The installers for several versions of ArcGIS (ArcMap) Desktop can be downloaded from 'communityhub.purdue.edu'. The links below will take you to the installers for the respective version.

Use this document as a quick start, but it will behoove you to also consult the on-board documentation and ESRI web help materials at support.esri.com. You do not need to login to access many of the articles available on this web site.

First, check a quick tour of what's new. ArcGIS Desktop has specific hardware and software requirements. It does not work on all computers.

Before installing, please check this site for minimum system requirements.

Note that older ArcGIS versions will be uninstalled automatically when installing a newer version. One needs to uninstall 10.0x and older versions first before installing any version newer than10.0.

Installation:

  • Double click on the downloaded exe file to start the installation. Follow the instructions.
  • Usually the defaults are fine.

Using Campus License Server (concurrent-use)

  • The Purdue license server URL is arcgislm.itap.purdue.edu.
  • The procedure to set the license server is:
    • Go to Start Menu->All Programs->ArcGIS->ArcGIS Administrator to open the ArcGIS Administrator window
    • Select “Desktop”
    • Select "Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use" radio button
    • Select the “Change…” button (near the middle of the dialog box) to set the license manager to arcgislm.itap.purdue.edu
    • Select "Apply" button in the lower right
    • Select "OK" button to close the window

Single Use License

  • Single use license can be used on only Purdue owned computers.
  • The procedure is to obtain a provisioning file for a single use license is:
    • Send an email to: itap@purdue.edu requesting a single use ArcGIS ArcGIS Desktop license for a Purdue Computer. By default, an Advanced type will be generated. You can specify Basic or Standard types if you wish. Specify the extensions that are needed.
    • An email will be sent from Esri to the Purdue email address used to send the request to itap@purdue.edu that will contain a “provisioning” file that will contain the authorization numbers and instructions on how to enter these authorizations numbers.
  • Note that single use licenses will need to be updated each year around the renewal date of Purdue’s contract with Esri (July 30).
